I Got Some Head In The Club...
HeadSpaceATL Event Review: "May Need Workshop This With Black People"
The new app Headero launched 2021 and they’ve partnered with Atlanta-based promoter and content creator, @BlackAdDICKtion to host events throughout the city. The entry was based on signing up for the app and the event advertised a good time. I went and now I have a couple thoughts.
The Layout
The Atlanta Eagle is one of Atlanta’s only clubs specifically for leather and kink expression. You’ll regularly walk in and find a sea of queer bodies clad in leather harnesses and chaps, or jocks and hound masks.
The bottom floor has three bars inside and another outside that opens as crowd needs arise. Immediately to the left at the front door are the steps up to the Headero event. You stepped in the club, paid your entry fee overlooking one bar to gain access to the upper level.
Most times, I have no insecurities at the door of the Atlanta Eagle. The White men (and that occasional Black lady) that take money outside the club for normal festivities are usually courteous. I pay my tithe and head in giving no consideration to who is inside because I’m free to roam, find my tribe and have a good time.
This set up felt much more exposed. I step in to the bar in whatever attire I’ve chosen to wear (or not wear), only to stand in front of a bar full of onlookers as the attendant checks ID, processes payment, and gives me entry to the festivities I came for.
When a Black promoter who brings primarily Black attendees to a non-Black space, and to gain entry you have to spend 5-minutes at the door being visually undressed by the otherwise non-Black patrons of the bar, it feels very auction block-ish.
I specifically felt this because of this older White guy who stood at the door watching the line form licking his lips and grabbing his manhood. I’m all for being fetishized at fetish events, but something felt very not-right about this experience at the door.
I Came Inside 7 (or 8) Guys, Depending on How You Count
WYD I was dick deep in whatever-his-name-is wondering what happened.
Then the White people on the bottom floor get to enjoy the venue, the same music, and arguably the same vibe for free while I paid $15 for the upstairs experience. Separate but not equal.
In the future, I’d recommend charging the same admission for the whole club like on First Friday’s hosted by Onyx, or any number of events hosted at this bar.
Upstairs
The Atlanta Eagle’s top floor is normally one big dance floor with a bar on the back wall. For this event, they’ve hung floor to ceiling curtains to section off the dance floor into more intimate zones.
Glory holes were cut in some of the curtains, some make shift dark rooms, but ultimately, a whole bunch of men standing around waiting for somebody to get on their knees.
The prime real estate was, as in most clubs, along the back wall in the corner. There was one marathon dick sucker who’s milkshake absolutely brought the boys to the yard. A group formed around him that drew a crowd of onlookers. It created a cycle of come, get head, move around. Felt like everybody who wanted a piece could get a piece.
A couple older White gents were engaging in the opposite corner (and I say this as a compliment) with reckless abandon. They were ass naked going from one dick to another, one mouth to another, living their best lives.
Admittedly so, there were a fair share of the DL boys that came to this event to be unknown but absolutely noticed. And a good top-to-bottom—rather, head giver to head receiver—ratio with a fair amount of flip-floppers.
The Vibe
Imagine you’re in one of these corners living your best life. Your knees have settled in, legs got limber. The thud of the music is giving you a good rhythm to throat the dick in your mouth while stroking the other two in your hands. Everyone is getting their life when suddenly the music stops and someone comes on the mic.
BlackadDICKtion—the very well-intentioned host—somewhere around midnight, breaks into the vibes to talk about the app and run a dick sucking competition on the dance floor. I won’t say it was weird, but I will say that’s not what I paid my $15 for.
He attempted to draw the attention of the whole event unsuccessfully. If I were working on getting somebody’s son’s nut, his presentation (whatever the context) would be a distraction from the dick at hand (or in mouth).
If I made a recommendation, I’d say keep the music going and run whatever program you’re going to run during the event. Allow those who want to engage to do so with no interruption and just understand you’re never going to have everyone’s undivided attention.
Final Thoughts
By this time, I’d gotten what I needed so, after 20 minutes of this talky-period, I gulped the last of my cocktail, readjusted myself and headed out.
Headero, I’d assume, is a pretty active app for men that enjoy head and oral play. Judging by this event, they are looking for some intentional access points into Black queer spaces.
This promoter, obviously, has a connection with Black folks and those that are attracted to them. I just think the execution of this event in this particular club might need some tweaks in order to effectively welcome somebody like me to where I feel completely at liberty to engage with people I feel comfortable engaging with.
I probably won’t be back to this event at this location, while I do generally appreciate Atlanta Eagle’s other events or regular club nights.
I always be leery and excited at the same time for events and at events like this.
I be excited to explore my kinks and pleasures with hopes of meeting more people of color in the fetish community. However, I am met way too often with me becoming the fetish or kink itself for our caucasian counterparts.
I totally agree with the “I don’t mind the objectification” piece because I know it’s a kink aspect but when the environment makes you feel like the hanging ham at the meat market it tends to dampen my kinks and fetishes. Yes, that could happen at (Black) bars but way more than it should at (White) bars.
I am in agreement in the logistics of an event like this must be structured out a bit. Otherwise, it would be very awkward to disrupt an environment that was created for people to be on their knees and pants down!! It would be like being in the swing at Flex and the lights come on for a bake sale pop-up! We have snicker-doodles every one!! 😂😂😂
