Dear Black Gay Men goes INTERNATIONAL
Other countries, other currencies, other horizons, the same mission of setting the gworls free.
We just launched Patreon as an homage to our origins as myfunnyname.com. I look at it as our way of connecting even deeper with those who support what we do as Dear Black Gay Men.
Think of it as one part daily affirmation, one part sex blog where we can share big life lessons and exclusive content from the channel. I’m excited to be extending our content and creating new ways to talk with our community of listeners and readers.
We’re still niche enough to where I get all the notifications of new subscribers and this one came through a little different. Every new reader, up til now, was in dollars: a distinction I didn’t even realize I had overlooked. But yesterday, in the wee hours of the night, we got our first international subscriber.
For a lot of the creators that I follow and respect, this is probably nothing of note, but I had a huge revelation: the world is bigger than what I see.
I’ve always thought I create content for me. People that follow us have my experience, walk in my shoes. Understand my trauma and triumphs. As if we’re this monolith. It’s almost an arrogance or egocentrism that had me believe that you were just like me.
To a degree, we are similar. We do share at least an interest in the same things—otherwise what are we doing here. But every set of eyes, every heart and mind that our content touches brings a slightly new insight. A different perspective that joins us together as the DBGM Family. And one subscriber in Euros…which has since increased…helped me realize that.
I had a similar experience in Washington, D.C. for a talk that I was doing alongside Hope Giselle and Conscious Lee. Two men that I later learned were of trans experience pulled me to the side and educated me on how Black gay men are not only cis. And a podcast that engages Black gay men should engage us all as best we can.
Every week, it seems, my horizons are being expanded in realizing what we’re building. It started as just me and a mic, then me and a conversation. And it’s becoming a thing all of its own that I’m blessed to see and encourage because of all of your support.
But I think the bigger lesson is we don’t truly know what our work will mean for the people it’s intended for. We create something, align our intentions, and hope for the best. Right now, my hope is to be more effective—I want to be the most effective Black Gay content creator you all will allow me to be.
Here’s to our journey together.
